Transportation Methods

Depending on your needs and the size of your shipment Armstrong Moving & Storage will arrange the proper mode of transportation for your belongings. Your shipment will be moved to the port of export (air or ocean) via truck or rail. From this point your shipment will be loaded onto an airplane or steamship vessel to complete the bulk of the journey. At destination your shipment will again be transported via truck or rail from the port of entry to our destination partner who will deliver your belongings to your new home.

Ocean Freight:

Generally used for larger household goods shipments

Longer transit time

Less expensive than air freight

Surface Ocean shipments primarily utilize two containers for shipping;

  Lift Vans are large crates constructed of plywood ranging in size for 196 cubic feet to 206 cubic feet. Generally used for smaller (3000 pounds or less) ocean freight shipments. These are lined with plastic to provide extra protection from water and moisture.

  Steamship Containers are similar to a semi trailer. These large metal containers are used for larger (over 3000 pounds) ocean freight shipments. Capacity of a container is approximately 1100 cubic feet for a twenty foot container and 2200 cubic feet for a forty foot container.

Air Freight:

Used for small, time sensitive shipments

Shorter transit time

More expensive than Ocean Freight

Air Containers are typically constructed of triple layered corrugated cardboard. This type of container ranges in size from 10 cubic feet to 95 cubic feet. These containers are specifically designed for transport of smaller shipments via airplane cargo holds.
